RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels leading to the site... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This mission, to take out militants who endanger our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the US military executed what it described as a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
